The Science of Play
When I mow the yard, I think about leaving patterns something like Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, or leaving shapes that can be seen from space. I end up going around in circles with the mower - weaving around trees or following the pattern of the flower beds until the “ripples” grow ever wider and farther away.
Almost 20 years ago I mowed a grass pattern arrow pointing North - and let the grass grow for months. It was called Directional Arrow North. You could only tell what it was by standing on the roof of the house. Or fly over in a plane. Or a UFO.
The neighbors must think I’m a loon, but I love to see the patterns in the early or late day shadows where the light rakes across the lawn, and it shows the texture of the grass bent in echoes of the land underneath.
